Done with all the green-leafed varieties, no interest in blooms and ready to add a splash of colour to your borders? Good. You don’t need colourful flowers to add some interesting patterns and colours to your borders. These garden plants with colourful leaves will bring your borders to life in no time!

Adding an extra dimension to your borders and actually complementing the blooms, these variegated plants will add year-round interest, dramatic contrast and plenty of colours.

1. Heuchera
Also known as coral bells, heuchera is the ideal bedding plant for many. They’re tough, low-growing, dense, hardy and colourful. From the caramel-coloured ruffled leaves of heuchera Frilly, to the strikingly colourful and disease-tolerant Plum Power. Better yet: add the ultra-hardy Heuchera Dark Secret to the mix to add some drama and contrast to the border!

2. Cotinus
Speaking of drama: to say that Cotinus Flamissimo has spectacular colours would be an understatement. The green flushed with purple leaves change to vivid orange with golden yellow in autumn. A spectacular sight! Not only is this incredible shrub colourful, it’s also very compact, doesn’t need any pruning, grows fast and hardly needs any looking after.

3. Cordyline
If you’re looking for the best Cordyline there is: you just found it. Charlie Boy has sensational colours. The Bordeaux centre with shiny pink edges looks absolutely breathtaking. Charlie Boy has a very strong stem, won’t overturn when it gets windy and hardly needs any looking after!

4. Cornus
Miracle is anything but an ordinary Cornus. This variegated beauty has green and white leaves with a pink border in spring and early summer. But when autumn comes, the leaves turn an intense purple pink. By late autumn, Miracle will amaze you with beautiful red stems, offering year-round interest in the garden.

5. Pennisetum
Looking for neon-like bright colours? Then Lumen Gold will be the answer to your quest. This eye-catching Pennisetum will brighten the darkest spots in the garden with its unique, powerful colours. The more sun it gets, the brighter the foliage!

6. Panicum
When it comes to grasses, we can’t forget about Panicum Purple Breeze. With beautiful dark purple flames on the leaves, it will add lots of drama and contrast to the garden. This plant likes a spot in the sun, is very hardy and hardly needs any maintenance!

7. Sedum
And last but most definitely not least, the latest family member of the Sunsparkler® family: Dream Dazzler. This beautiful low-maintenance sedum is highly disease resistant, compact and excellent for ground cover. But the most interesting thing about it is the absolutely dazzling colours that are different depending on their spot! The perfect sedum to complement the blooms in a perennial border, add interest to a rock garden or freshen up a border with some stunning ground cover.
