Yes, you read that correctly: the white garden or moon garden is the latest trend when it comes to landscaping and garden design. What is a moon garden, we hear you wonder? They’re one of the biggest trends on TikTok right now (thanks, Martha Stewart!). And what’s trending on TikTok will most definitely be what the younger generation gardeners will look for in garden centres. Prepare to stock landscape sculptures, moon gates and the most spectacular varieties for the moon garden (or any garden for that matter).

What is a moon garden or a white garden?
The moon garden is a beautiful, century-old trend packed with symbolism. Elegant, timeless and very easy to establish. Moon gardens, also called white gardens, have very contemporary, clean, informal and elegant planting schemes consisting mostly of white plants. They look most wonderful at twilight, hence the name Moon Gardens.

The trend isn’t the strangest we’ve seen. Have a look at the luminescence of the dozens of flowers on Agapanthus Everpanthus® Ever White in moonlight, or the silver, showy shrub Buddleja Silver Anniversary that absolutely shines in the garden, or the stunning display Clematis Manju creates when the moon is full. Quite understandable that customers worldwide want to create these scenes in their backyards.

But what varieties are most suited for the white or moon gardens? Customers might not want an all-white garden, so some variety is important. Combining different shades of white and silver with contrastingly coloured foliage will create the most breathtaking borders. Hydrangea Little Spooky will steal the show with extra large flower plumes and beautiful dark foliage, while Sempervivum Arctic White will shine in the moonlight on a green roof. Choisya White Dazzler will look stunning throughout the year and suit any garden size thanks to its extra compact and mound-forming habit.

Styrax Evening Light is suitably named as it will undoubtedly add romance to the moon garden whilst also creating dramatic contrasts with its glossy, dark purple foliage. The same goes for flowering machine Dahlia Dreamy® Days: the ideal ground cover for a white moon garden. And what plants better to add to a moon-like landscape than aptly named Delosperma Jewel of the Desert Moon Stone or Chlorophytum Starlight whose flowers look like sparkling stars?!

Whether you’re stocking for the moon garden trend or hoping to add some popular top performers to the assortment, these varieties will not disappoint!
